Increasing Impact

Academic impact – defined largely in terms of citations of one’s work within academia – is crucial to one’s academic career. But research can – and should – influence the world beyond the confines of one’s discipline. Indeed, hiring committees and funding bodies are increasingly concerned with research impact beyond the academy. In this panel, experts discuss three related issues: (1) the importance and potential benefits of increasing impact beyond academic publishing, (2) strategies for achieving impact of this sort – for example, via social media and writing for public audiences, and (3) how to strike a balance between these kinds of work and traditional academic activities. This panel is targeted towards students and early career researchers, though all are welcome to attend.
