Abstract:

This paper explores the idea of sexual, or erotic loneliness. First, erotic loneliness is defined as a specific kind of loneliness. Next, the paper provides empirical data including testimonies to describe the scope of the problem. Third, it critically reviews the ethical literature on sex rights, largely agreeing that while a right to sex does exist it is a complex right that ought to be understood in a nuanced fashion. Lastly, outlining a granular understanding of loneliness, the article tentatively suggests four kinds of goods that people may need in order not to feel erotically lonely: touch, intimacy, companionship, and physiological fulfilment.
